We get asked all the time β€” "where should I take my dog while we're visiting Yarmouth?" After years of exploring this part of Nova Scotia with our own dogs, we figured it was time to put it all in one place.

This isn't a generic roundup scraped from a travel blog. Every place on this list is somewhere we've actually been, with our own dogs, and genuinely recommend. Sprint, Storm, Meka and Tye have sniffed their way around most of these spots. We think yours will love them too.

We've also built an interactive map so you can explore all of these places visually, filter by category, and get directions straight from your phone.

🍽️ Eat & Drink

Dog-friendly patios and outdoor spots

Rudder's Seafood Restaurant & Brew Pub

The classic Yarmouth waterfront experience. Rudder's has a wrap-around deck overlooking the marina, handcrafted ales brewed on site, and fresh seafood that's hard to beat anywhere in Nova Scotia. Dogs are welcome on the patio and the staff are used to it β€” bring a water bowl and they'll top it up without being asked.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: The lobster poutine is legendary. Arrive early on summer weekends β€” the patio fills up fast and they don't take reservations for outdoor seating.

Honey Bees Restaurant

Just 4km from downtown Yarmouth, Honey Bees is an award-winning Japanese and Korean kitchen that has quietly become one of the best restaurants in the region. They have a large patio with a dedicated dog-friendly area β€” your dog gets their own space while you work your way through sushi, bubble tea, and some of the best ice cream in Southwest NS.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Try the Digby scallop roll β€” it's exceptional. They're closed Monday and Tuesday, so plan accordingly.

The Shanty CafΓ©

A beloved little social enterprise cafΓ© on the Yarmouth waterfront. Creative breakfasts, Cuban-inspired lunches, housemade bread and a genuinely warm vibe. The kind of place locals protect fiercely. Ask about outdoor seating β€” they'll do their best to accommodate you and your dog.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: The Cuban croquetas and black bean soup are exceptional. Breakfast and lunch only β€” they close at 2pm.

🌲 Trails & Nature

Leash up and explore

Cape Forchu Lighthouse & Leif Erikson Trail

If you do one thing with your dog in Yarmouth, make it Cape Forchu. The iconic "apple core" lighthouse sits on 19 acres of rugged coastal headland, and the Leif Erikson Trail winds through dramatic rock formations with ocean views that rival anything on the South Shore. Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, year-round. Leash required at all times.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Come at sunset. It rivals Peggy's Cove for drama and beauty, and you'll have it almost to yourself.

Broad Brook Wetland Trail

Right in the heart of Yarmouth, the Broad Brook trail is a peaceful, accessible walk through wetland and green space. It connects directly to the Yarmouth Dog Park, making it a great loop β€” walk the trail, then let your dog burn off the rest of their energy off-leash.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Great for a post-daycare stroll. Easy on the legs and very calming for reactive dogs.

πŸ–οΈ Beaches

Sand, sea and happy dogs

Mavillette Beach Provincial Park

About 35 minutes north of Yarmouth, Mavillette is one of the most stunning and least crowded beaches in all of Nova Scotia. Kilometres of white sand, warm-ish water, and bald eagles circling overhead. Dogs are welcome on leash β€” just keep them out of the designated swimming areas. At low tide the beach stretches so far you'll lose track of time.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Check the tides before you go β€” high tide comes right up the beach and significantly reduces the space. Low tide is magical.

πŸ• Dog Parks

Off-leash and loving it

Yarmouth Dog Park

Yarmouth's fully fenced off-leash dog park sits alongside the Broad Brook Trail at 2 Clements Ave. Double-gated entry, two separate sections for dogs that need a bit more space from each other, and usually water and bowls on site. A solid community park that's well-maintained and well-used.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Park behind the Mariners' ball field β€” it's the easiest access point.

🏨 Where to Stay

Pet-friendly accommodation in Yarmouth

Rodd Grand Yarmouth Hotel

Centrally located on Main Street, the Rodd Grand is the classic Yarmouth stay β€” walking distance to the waterfront, Rudder's, the Shanty and the boardwalk. Dogs are welcome, and if you book directly with the hotel rather than through a third-party site, they'll waive the pet fee entirely.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Book direct β€” roddvacations.com β€” to avoid the pet fee. Don't book through Hotels.com or Booking.com for this one.

Tru by Hilton Yarmouth

A more modern option on the edge of Yarmouth β€” clean, well-reviewed, pool and breakfast included. Pet-friendly with no drama about it. Particularly convenient if you're arriving on the CAT Ferry from Bar Harbor β€” it's just 7 minutes from the terminal.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Great base if you're doing a longer Southwest NS road trip with your dog.

β›΅ Worth the Drive

A little further afield β€” absolutely worth it

Tusket Island Tours β€” Wedgeport

About 20 minutes south of Yarmouth, Tusket Island Tours runs dog-friendly boat trips out to the historic Tusket Islands β€” seal spotting, lobster trap hauling, fresh chowder and the kind of Nova Scotia fishing culture you can't find anywhere else. Call ahead to confirm your dog can join; they're usually very accommodating depending on size.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Book directly with Simon. One of the best local experiences in all of Southwest NS β€” genuinely unmissable.

Mateus Bistro β€” Mahone Bay

Yes, Mahone Bay is about 2.5 hours from Yarmouth β€” but Mateus Bistro is genuinely one of the best restaurants in Nova Scotia, and it was recommended to us by one of our own clients. Dog-friendly patio, outstanding food, warm atmosphere in one of the prettiest towns in the province. If you're doing a longer trip through Southwest NS, build your route around it.

πŸ’‘ Our tip: Worth every kilometre. Check their hours before you go β€” they're closed Tuesday and Wednesday. At 533 Main St, Mahone Bay.
